Buying guide
What to look for when choosing motor insurance.
01
Third party vs comprehensive
Third party cover is the legal minimum in Ethiopia — it covers damage you cause to others. Comprehensive cover also covers your own vehicle for accidents, fire and theft. The premium difference is typically 0.5–1.5% of vehicle value annually.
02
How the NBE minimum schedule works
The NBE publishes a minimum premium schedule by vehicle category. All insurers must charge at or above this minimum. BirrBank shows you who charges at the minimum and who charges above it — and what extra cover you get for the difference.
03
What affects your premium
Vehicle age, type, engine size and market value all affect your premium. Comprehensive premiums are expressed as a percentage of vehicle value. A newer or higher-value vehicle will cost more to insure — not because rates differ but because the base is higher.
Data integrity
